1999-2005 Discovery of latest open-cut coal mine in NSW: I played a pivotal role in the discovery and subsequent exploration of the Anvil Hill coal deposit that is now the Mangoola Mine operated by Xstrata near Denman in the Hunter Valley. The discovery was driven by the research in my PhD which not only challenged existing academic concepts on local coal formation but also perceptions of coal prospectivity in the upper seams of the Hunter Valley.
