Drillhole Powercoal Anvil Hill 01 (PAH01) was the discovery hole at Anvil Hill and was spudded in early 1999. It intersected the Great Northern and Fassifern seams of the Newcastle Coal Measures at 30 metres depth and over 120km away from their home in the Newcastle Coalfield.
Rather than elation it was more a relief to have success following the time and money invested in the getting a rig onto the property. There was even ridicule in some quarters mainly aimed at company management who backed my ideas at the time. Some deposits have good consistency and this was one such deposit. There were very few surprises during subsequent drilling, demonstrated by the fact that the resources estimated in 1999 (after drilling only 27 holes) did not vary by more than 5% following drilling of an additional 150 holes during the subsequent years I was involved in developing Anvil Hill.
